Have you noticed a mysterious puddle developing around your toilet after flushing? Leaking water equals trouble brewing right where your toilet meets the floor. While some fixes are safe to DIY, others require the expertise of your trusted plumbers in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to prevent further damage.

Continue reading as King's Services covers how to fix a toilet leaking at the base, when to call in their experts, and how their plumbers tackle the problem with precision.

Why Toilets Leak at the Base in Winnipeg Homes

In addition to water pooling around a toilet immediately after flushing, you may also notice a persistent musty or sewer odour. Your toilet may also feel wobbly. In most cases, toilets that leak at the floor line have one of three problems:

  • A failed wax ring seal
  • Loose mounting bolts
  • A damaged toilet flange

Wintertime temperature swings in Winnipeg can aggravate leaking, as frozen plumbing vents or shifting subfloors in older homes make these issues more common in our local climate.

How To Fix a Toilet Leaking at the Base Safely

Before reaching for the caulk or a wrench, take a few precautionary steps. You’ll want to wear gloves and have tools like a wrench, putty knife, sponge, towel, and a new wax ring handy.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water

Begin by locating the water shut-off valve behind the toilet. Turn it clockwise to stop the flow, then flush the toilet to drain the tank and bowl. Sponge out any remaining water.

Step 2: Check for Loose Mounting Bolts

Once you dry the floor around the toilet, try gently rocking the toilet. If it shifts, loose mounting bolts are a likely cause. Pry off the plastic caps at the base of the toilet. Use a wrench to tighten the bolts carefully. Over-tightening can crack the porcelain. Turn the water back on and flush to see if the leak has stopped.

Step 3: Check the Wax Ring

If you are comfortable with heavy lifting, you might check the wax ring.

  1. Disconnect the water supply line and remove the mounting bolts.
  2. Lift the toilet straight up.
  3. Scrape away the old wax using a putty knife.
  4. If you see cracks in the toilet flange or if it's uneven, stop and call your plumber.
  5. If the flange is sound, place a new wax ring on it.
  6. Lower the toilet back onto the bolts, press down to seal, and re-tighten the bolts evenly.
  7. Reconnect the water line and turn the water shut-off valve back on.

When To Call a Professional Plumber in Winnipeg

DIY repairs can solve basic issues, but it’s important to know your limits. Call King’s Services if:

  • Your toilet flange inspection reveals damage or corrosion
  • The wax ring fix doesn’t solve the problem
  • The floor feels soft or mouldy, which indicates subfloor damage
  • You notice a cracked toilet base or feel uncomfortable lifting a 70+ lb fixture

Especially in Winnipeg, where long winters can contribute to frost heave and shifting pipes, professional help ensures your plumbing is safe and leak-free.

Construction sites in Winnipeg face unique challenges - from harsh weather conditions to strict municipal bylaws and the rising risk of site theft. Whether you are managing a large-scale commercial development in downtown Winnipeg or a residential renovation in Tuxedo, securing your perimeter isn't just a recommendation; it is an operational necessity. In this guide, we break down exactly why temporary fencing is critical for your bottom line and safety record, and how to choose the right solution for your project. What Is Temporary Fencing, And How It Works Temporary fencing, often referred to in the industry as "rent-a-fence" provides a non-permanent, self-supporting perimeter for job sites. Unlike permanent fencing, which requires post holes and concrete footing, often impossible in frozen Manitoba ground, temporary fencing utilizes a modular panel system held together by heavy-duty bases (feet) and clamps. The mechanics of a secure perimeter: Modularity: Panels can be moved and reconfigured as the job site evolves. Stability: High-visibility bases keep the fence upright, while additional wind bracing ensures stability during high-wind events common in the Prairies. Versatility: It serves as a physical barrier, a visual screen, and a liability shield.
